How to use a head lice comb
To help get your child to lean over a sheet of white or light coloured paper or cloth as you comb through the hair. You will probably see live head lice and eggs (nits) drop onto the paper.
You can check for lice on dry or wet hair although head lice and nit removal is best done on hair pre-treated with a natural non-toxic head lice treatment such as Nit-Nurse as this helps dissolve the glue, release the nits and make removal easier.
The best way to use a head lice comb:
Wet Head Lice Combing (Recommended)
For wet combing, simply wash hair and apply a natural non-toxic lice and nit treatment such as Nit-Nurse. Nit-Nurse uses especially thickened natural plant extracts and oils, (including Olea europaea – one of nature’s anti-parasitics – and Eucalyptus globulus – a powerful natural disinfectant) directly to hair. This will help you comb through the hair as described below and start to eradicate head lice and nits at the same time. Afterwards, rinse out and check hair again with the nit comb before drying.

- Use a normal brush or an ordinary comb to smooth out and detangle dry hair.
- Once hair has been detangled, switch to the head lice comb, sometimes called a detection comb.
- Start at the middle of the front of the scalp.
- Comb the hair from the roots right through to the very end of the hair.
- After each stroke, examine the teeth of the comb for any trace of live hair nits or lice.
- Rinse the comb if you find any lice.
- Continue combing section by section until you've done the whole head of hair.
- Make sure you cover every inch of the scalp, including the area just behind the ears and at the nape of the neck (as this is where lice like to lay their egg (nit).
TIP!
People with thick, long or tangled hair often find a product that lubricates the comb makes it easier to get the nit comb through – especially for children with longer, curly or tangled hair.
